Enrichment

Today I got to experience my first day in enrichment. The enrichment center is where volunteers spend time building different toys for the animals and objects for their habitats for them to observe. What I really love about this station is that you often see animals in zoos bored and tired, but with enrichment it allows to entertain the animals to keep them stimulated. This is vital and the zoo makes it very apparent that this is a huge part of the animal’s lives at the zoo.

I spent the majority of my time in the enrichment center making toys for the parrots. I took pieces of rope and strung blocks onto it for the birds to be able to chew at it. I Than balled up newspaper and put it into a box so that they would be able to spray it with perfume so the animal that receives it will be able to search through it. Keeping the animals curious and stimulated is important especially in captivity. I love that this is such a huge part to the zoo because, otherwise, the animals would just be sit in their exhibits bored all day and lead boring lives. I think this further helps me answer my essential question as well.
