The next task I had today was more interesting and hands-on. I helped organize, file, and create hospital bags for victims. While these bags are comforting for the victims, they serve as a necessity. When rape victims come into the hospital, all of their clothing is taken away for testing. That is why a hospital bag is necessary. It includes the bare necessities: sweatpants, a t-shirt, socks, underwear, and a hygiene kit (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, and a panty liner/pad). Other items (like sweatshirts, jackets, blankets and journals) are sometimes put in random bags as "bonus items" if there are donations. Today, I sorted many donations (by size and article of clothing) into the corresponding drawer and also put together a few bags with the stored materials.
After organizing all of the hospital bags, I helped one of the employees (Mary Kate) with a poster that recognizes volunteers. While I am not keen on art, I enjoyed reading quotes from each of the volunteers and I appreciate each of their hard work and time dedicated. The CRCC has many dedicated volunteers who share a passion to help those in crisis.
I am also driving to a kickboxing class and self defense class as soon as I finish up at the CRCC tonight so I am excited!
I just got back from my long hours at FIght Fit Cleveland and have learned so much today. Instead of Sarah (one of my sponsors) teaching, we had Brian today. He was FANTASTIC. We learned a lot about how to get up off of the floor effectively without being knocked down. We also did a lot with elbow jabs, hooks, and crosses. My new gloves are great. Below is a photo of my hands two hours after the class ended. I broke through some skin today on my index fingers and thumbs which means I am punching wrong. Hopefully I will fix this issue soon!
