Jackson Goldberg - Day 6

Today's highlights actually involved delving into the screenwriting aspect of the project a little early. Mark introduced me to the folks in the original programing department, who gave me a script for an upcoming episode of a miniseries to read and evaluate. Titled "Remember Me", a quick search reveals that the show will actually air on the BBC later this year, presumably before being broadcast on American screens by Sundance. Anyway, the script itself, which was for the premiere episode, was quite good. From the beginning there's an eerie vibe that immediately sets the tone and lures you into the mystery, and from there it escalates into something intensely and uncannily thrilling. It more or less ends where it starts, without providing the reader/viewer with any real answers, but the intrigue is enough to keep you tuning in and wanting more. What I was most impressed by, however, was how much the script was able to convey without expository dialogue. Again, I cannot be very specific here, (and I do apologize, because I know that would make posts like these more interesting), but generally there are a lot of character moments and relationships that are fleshed out and described not by what we hear, but by what we see, just as that old storyteller's adage instructs. As I've learned, that's a signal of strong screenwriting.

Tomorrow, I'm probably going to be sitting in on a meeting regarding another script, and additionally I have been tasked with finding a way to market "Risky Business" and "Eyes Wide Shut" as a double feature beyond the Tom Cruise connection. Should be a good challenge.
